Protecting Your Home While On Vacation

It can be like a scene from a movie, scrambling to get suitcases packed before heading off on vacation, but sometimes we may forget to take a few simple steps to keep our homes safe.

"It's important to lock all your stuff up, your home up, your garage up. help us take care of your property," says Parkersburg Police Sgt. Greg Collins.

If you're going away on a trip, it takes more than just locking your door to keep your home safe.

"There are still a few people in the world who believe you don't have to lock your stuff up."

One of the easiest things you can do is simply making it look like you're not actually gone.

"Have a good lighted home on your house inside and out. Have your lights on timers. Put a radio or maybe a televsion on a timer for a short period of time."

Good neighbors are a great resource.

"Have them park in your driveway. Have them take your trash out on trash morning. Have them get your mail."

You can also have the post office stop your mail for a week or two.

"The last thing you want is your mail piling up in your mailbox and someone who's really watching your house, they'll be able to tell that you're not getting that."

It may be a good idea to post vacation pictures when you get home. Police say it's not a good idea to put plans on social media.

"If you're going away on vacation, one thing we see a lot of that's really not a good idea is people will advertise their vacation either on social media, or they'll leave a message on their phone that says I'm away on vacation or they'll just tell too many people."

Police also say if you're really concerned about your home, you can call them. They may be able to drive by during patrols.
