UPDATE: 6-13-13 6:49PM

Help is on the way for flood victims in Roane County.

Local Red Cross volunteers were mobilized Thursday to head that direction.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross sent an emergency response team to its shelter at the National Guard Armory in Spencer.

There, they'll help give out food, cleaning supplies and set out cots for victims staying overnight at the armory.

Kitchen Manager, James Blair, says the main streets, Wal-Mart and the 9-1-1 Center in Spencer were all flooded.

The damage assessment teams will be in Roane County Friday morning to determine how many people and homes were affected from the flood.

The 9-1-1 Center in Roane County had to be evacuated because of flooding.

It's been a busy year for the Red Cross with the tornadoes in Oklahoma and now the local Parkersburg chapter is doing everything they can here at home.

Todd Wines, emergency services director says last year's derecho caught everyone off guard, but people can really be prepared this time around.

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Start with finding the most secure location in your house, such as the basement or a local building that offers protection, if you don’t feel safe at home.

“Lessons learned from last year -- have a full tank of gas if you're running a little bit low, charge your electronics, your cell phones, pull some cash out of the ATM and just keep an eye on the news with the weather and watch out for the alerts and warnings,” Wines says.

The Red Cross is mobilizing their volunteers and putting them on standby.

They’ve contacted emergency management for our area counties and let them know they're here to help if anything happens.
