Republicans Preparing For 2014

We're getting a bit of a break from elections this year, but both parties are gearing up for 2014.

The new executive director of the West Virginia Republican party talked about that election with WTAP Tuesday.

Second District congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito's decision to run for the U.S. Senate-coupled with Jay Rockefeller's decision not to run for re-election means a wide-open race for two offices.

Aside from the senate, the congressional seat will be an open race.

"The one thing the state party doesn't get involved in is primaries," says Executive Director Ward Wyatt. "We hope the strongest candidate rises to the top. But I do believe it's our seat to lose. We absolutely believe we can hold it. The question is, is there a strong Republican candidate out there for the general election."

And although Democrats are still in control of the House of Delegates,
Wyatt says Republicans have hope someone from the GOP can be elected to replace outgoing Speaker Rick Thompson.

He says a shift of five votes among house members can accomplish that.
