Summer Meal Locations Announced

Hungry children in West Virginia are getting help over the summer with meal programs throughout the state.

"They've qualified for free or reduced price meals during the school year. That need doesn't go away once school ends," says Wood County Schools Director of Food Services, Beverly Blough.

Fulfilling the need of hungry students in West Virginia doesn't stop when the summer bell rings.

"They're out there playing, running around, going swimming, doing a lot of different activities and they need the food to continue to meet all of those needs and nutritional needs."

For the last 33 years, Wood County Schools has provided summer meals at many locations throughout the valley.

"The Wood County Recreation Association has playground sites at City Park, Fairplains Elementary School, Lubeck, Waverly."

The many program locations make it easy and convenient for kids to walk down the street to eat lunch.

"There's just a few of those around the community where children can go to the area, enjoy lunch and participate in whatever activities that the group may have planned so they just don't have to go very far from their neighborhood."

Registration is only required if children want to participate in other activities the programs offer. Organizers say they just need to know a day in advance to make sure enough meals are available.

"They need to give us a count ahead of time. It's always nice when a child says, 'I'll be here tomorrow for lunch," and then we can include them and they'll be enough food for everybody that comes."

The nine week program begins next Monday, June 17th. For a full list of locations, click on the hot button.
