Around 11 o'clock Sunday morning the Parkersburg Fire Department responded to a call at a duplex on Spring Street.
Family members did make it out of the building except for two men trapped on the upper levels, forcing them to climb onto the roof.
One man was on the second floor roof and the other was trapped on the third floor roof.
That man had to be rescued by firefighters and suffered second degree burns on his back.
"They were standing in the doorway yelling for me, woke me up. I ran downstairs, opened the door coming out of the attic. And there was no way I was coming through. The flames actually shot in at me. I ended up crawling back, climbing to the window and out the window onto the roof waiting for the department to get here," said Eric Hinton.
The fire is believed to have started in the back laundry room. The second half of the duplex is unoccupied.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
