Wood County High School students stepped into the business world for the day, as the Chamber of Commerce of the Mid-Ohio Valley kicked off their business symposium.

Our very own Lauren Keeling represented WTAP and the news business.

No matter what career path the students ultimately choose, Chamber President Jill Parsons says everybody needs basic business skills and a strong ethical basis.

She says they need to be able to communicate with one another and work in teams, so all of those skills translate across every profession.

"This is an opportunity to bring together juniors and seniors in high school and give them some lessons about ethics and communication," Parsons says. "Our theme today is 'building your brand.'"

About 80 students from area high schools: including Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, Parkersburg Catholic, Willamstown and Wood County Christian School all took part in the event.

Students interacted with their business reps, learned about the career path that person took and about that business as a local employer.

Parsons says there are great companies here and as the students look at their post education career paths, she hopes there are opportunities for them to return home.

One student, Matt Zlatkind, a junior at Williamstown High School says the symposium was a cool experience, getting to meet local business leaders and kids he doesn't know from other schools. It also gave him more exposure to industries he wasn't familiar with.

"I feel like I'm going to get a good business background and learn how to enhance my career later on. I'm not really sure what I want to do, but I know a business background will help me in anything -- so it's good," he says.

The 11th-grader says the event was definitely worth it, because it gave him a chance to meet new people, interact with the business community and miss a day of school.
