CHARLESTON, W.V. (AP) - West Virginia University has ventured into the Internet world of adult-themed domains to protect its trademarks.
Spokesman John Bolt tells the Charleston Daily Mail that WVU bought 18 Internet .xxx domain names to keep them out of the hands of pornography site operators and "cyber squatters" who buy domains and then sell them.
The domains include WVU's four federally registered trademarks: "WV," "WVU," "West Virginia University" and "Mountaineers."
Bolt says the university also bought unofficial domain names, including www.letsgomountaineers.xxx . He says WVU officials anticipate these domain names will be popular.
The university doesn't plan to use any of the .xxx domains.
