They put out the call and the community answered. After a weekend long food drive Walmart is thanking the community for being so generous with donations.
During the month of April Walmart is working to feed communities across the nation. This weekend the Parkersburg and Vienna Walmarts held food drives and all proceeds will be donated to Old Man Rivers.
Co-Manager, Tina Rhodes, says the Parkersburg and Vienna communities stepped up to the challenge and exceeded expectations.
"Our customers are the biggest helpers that we have here" Rhodes explains. "They are willing to donate and we've tried to make it easy for them to donate and they are very responsive."
Walmart is also running a Facebook competition to see which of 200 pre-selected cities can rack up the most votes and win grant money to be donated to local food banks. Parkersburg/Vienna is currently in the top ten and eligible to win a $50,000 prize for Old Man Rivers.

Walmart in Vienna and Parkersburg will hold a food drive Saturday (April 21st) to help fight hunger in the area.
Each store will collect food from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm this Saturday. All the food collected will be given to Old Man Rivers Mission.
Walmart has also launched a national Facebook campaign to combat hunger.
After gathering unemployment numbers from around the nation, Walmart compiled a list of the top 200 most unemployed regions. Parkersburg and Wheeling, WV, both made the list.
The community that compiles the most votes on Facebook will win a $1 million grant for local food pantries. (The local stores do not profit off the win.) Right now. Parkersburg needs a few votes to be able to win.
"We're sitting in 18th place. So, if it ended today, we would win a $50,000 grant," says Kevin Ohse, store manager of the Walmart in South Parkersburg. "The winning community will be getting a one million dollar grant. So, the company is giving away one million dollars total."
To vote for the Parkersburg Walmart on Facebook go to facebook.com/walmart and click on the Fighting Hunger icon. You can only vote once a day. Voting closes on April 30th.
