W.V. Plans Comprehensive Student Behavior Policy

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia has five separate policies addressing student behavior in public schools. The state Board of Education wants to combine them into one comprehensive policy.

The new policy would encompass everything expected of students and school systems to make schools safe and supportive. It would cover substance abuse, harassment and violence at school, and other behavior issues.

The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/qTbNyS ) reports that the Board of Education decided Thursday to put the new policy out for public comment for 60 days. If approved, the policy would go into effect July 1, 2012.

State Superintendent of Schools Jorea Marple says it makes sense to address student behavior with one policy.
