Parkersburg Police Department Changes to 10-Hour Shifts

Officers with the Parkersburg Police Department are changing to 10-hour a day shifts.

This is a change from their 8-hour shift meaning that officers will now work 4 days a week.

Chief Joe Martin says this will enable two shifts to work at the same time.

Officers' caseloads have been overwhelming and this change will allow for foot patrol, and hopefully a more proactive approach to law enforcement.

It took effect on Monday and the community is already showing support for the change.

" Just increasing the volume of officers out there at any given time is a good thing. It's definitely a deterrent from a criminal standpoint and also the law abiding folks that live in the city, they feel safer. Just the perception that there's more of us to go around basically," says Chief Martin.

Chief Martin also says it gives officers a chance to spend more time with their families which has mental and physical benefits while they are on the job.
