Cyclists Ride to Raise Awareness

It happens every month.

A group of bicyclists pedal around Parkersburg on the first Friday to raise awareness.

Riders take a highly traveled route to make drivers more aware of the presence and rights of bicyclists.

While participation in the monthly ride is down, area bike shops say they have seen an increase in sales.

Some see this as a much cheaper alternative to driving.

"Well this is our first Friday ride that we do every month to promote awareness of cycling. I'd heard from legislators, etc., that they didn't want to do anything about cycling in the area because they never saw anyone cycling. So we've taken it up ourselves to cycle in places where we will be seen cycling," says Vice President of the Blennerhassett Bicycle Club Greg Garrett.

Later this month cyclists will celebrate "Ride Your Bike to Work Day" and encourage all to participate in the event.
