Red light violations are the leading cause of crashes in West Virginia and across the country.

Officers across the state are taking part in the Target Red Campaign.
Up to 14 Parkersburg police will be working grant funded overtime to patrol problem intersections throughout august.

They say if any part of the vehicle enters or crosses an intersection when the light turns red it's a violation.

"Chief Martin has made a new commitment on traffic safety. We need to change the driving habits of people in Parkersburg. There's a lot of problems. It's dangerous at times. So we need to do our job and protect the motorists and pedestrians and this grant affords us the opportunity to do it," says Parkersburg Police Department Sergeant Greg Collins.

Officials are urging drivers to stop at all red lights and will not be releasing the targeted areas of the crackdown.
