Parkersburg's Business Boom

Three months into the new year and handfuls of businesses are looking to make a home in Parkersburg.

Mayor Bob Newell says since the beginning of 2012, twenty new businesses applied for a license in the city of Parkersburg. Four of those are in the downtown district and Mayor Newell says keeping the downtown area vibrant is a major contributing factor to a successful city.

"Every community has to have a vibrant downtown to be successful. We've really been working hard over the past few years to revitalize the downtown area," Mayor Newell says. "The thing that gave it the big shot in the arm was the building of the Highmark building. That was very significant. Then, of course, the interest of WVU-P moving downtown helped spark a lot of the interest also."

Mayor Newell said he's excited to see the new businesses in the city and see job growth from the new ventures.
