West Virginia Celebrating 149th Birthday

Happy 149th birthday to the Mountain State!'

West Virginia officially became a state June 20th, 1863 and for the past 149 years it's grown a lot.

Across the valley, celebrations were held to say happy birthday.

In Williamstown, visitors at the West Virginia welcome center enjoyed a birthday cake.

Music filled the center as the celebration was underway.

A flag was also displayed with 35 stars, signifying West Virginia as the 35th state.

"It's West Virginia's 149th birthday. We're the only state in the nation that became a state as a result of the Civil War and we just wanted to share all of our history with the travelers," says Cindy Sheppard.

"I think it's a wonderful thing that everyone can come out and people need to do this. Besides they can listen to great music," says Charlotte Grant.
