Fewer Deputies

Visitors to the department are greeted by a message advising them where they can find help in emergencies.

Thirteen deputies were laid off Friday, because of the department's lack of funding.

Sheriff Ralph Trussell says that's led to a lack of on-duty staff to handle calls.

"We have a couple of deputies working day shift, and some evening shifts, we have two people on," the sheriff said. "But there's nobody on midnight shift and part of the evening shift, there is only going to be one dispatcher. The same's true the day shift on Sunday; I was here by myself yesterday."

Sheriff Trussell says it's fortunate there have been no major problems in the county of 23,000 residents.

Deputies Monday began informational picketing to protest the cutbacks.
