For people living in Parkersburg’s sixth council district, next week's election won't be the last one they'll have this year. A special election will have to be held to replace councilwoman Betty Mather.
Mather resigned last night, saying she could no longer work with current council members. The special election is required because Mather stepped down more than a year before her current term ends.
"There are state requirements we have to go through now, such as absentee voting and early voting," said Parkersburg City Clerk Connie Shaffer. "But it's a city charter and state code requirement."
The election will have to be held within 60 days of Mather's resignation, which takes effect Sunday. That means it’s likely to be held during the holiday season.
