The last of the county officials elected and re-elected for a new term were sworn in Monday morning.
Not only did prosecutor Ginny Conley take the oath of office, her assistant prosecutors joined in as well, but the newest member of the Wood County Commission, while not a stranger to local government, wasn't chosen in the November elections.
Vienna Police Chief Gary Deem was chosen by fellow commissioners two weeks ago to replace Ken Merritt, who was elected sheriff in November.
"I'm doing what's best for the people," said Deem, who was Vienna's police chief for more than 35 years, "whether it's law enforcement or helping the citizens make their way of life better or make the county better."
And Deem might be eventually more than a commissioner. Rick Modesitt was re-elected commission president, but only for a six-month term.
"I just want to do a good job for the citizens of Wood County," Deem said, "something where they will comfortable with me and trust me and they will come and talk to me about any problems that they have."
Whether Deem is the candidate or not, his seat will come up in the November 2006 election. Deem plans to attend a seminar later this month, dealing with issues such as tax incremental financing.
