The mother of slain child beauty queen Jon Benet Ramsey died Saturday after a recurrence of ovarian cancer.
Patsy Paugh Ramsey was 49. She was a native of Parkersburg, and was a Miss West Virginia in 1977.
Her lawyer, L. Lin Wood, says Ramsey had been battling cancer since 1993 and had suffered a setback three years ago. Her husband, John, was with her at the time of her death.
Patsy and John Ramsey returned to Parkersburg in 2000 to attend Patsy's 25th Anniversary Class Reunion at Parkersburg High School. Because of the publicity surrounding the murder case, the event attracted statewide and national attention. Patsy Ramsey acknowledged the attention, but said her friends just remembered her as their old friend from school.
"That's the nice thing about coming back to old friends," she told reporters. "They know us. They've always known us. They know our families. Many of them met Jon Benet (in 1995). I've been to all of my reunions, so there's no explaining needed when you're among friends."
Jon Benet was found beaten and strangled in her parents' Boulder, Colorado basement on Christmas Day, 1996. A grand jury investigation ended with no indictments, and no arrests have been made. The parents have insisted that an intruder was responsible.
The Ramseys left Colorado and had residences in Atlanta and in Michigan, where John Ramsey unsuccessfully ran for office.
