Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin clinched re-election Tuesday, brushing aside a pair of opponents in his bid for a second term.

The 61-year-old Democrat ran on his efforts to reverse some of the mountain state's chronic economic woes.

The state under his watch has privatized its oft-troubled workers' compensation program, and gradually but modestly cut both business and consumer taxes.

The incumbent has also been buoyed by healthy state finances amid the ongoing financial turmoil.

Manchin defeated former Republican Legislator Russ Weeks and Jesse Johnson, the Mountain Party's nominee.

The call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for the Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
