Charleston, WV (AP) -- The U.S. Postal Service says it's closing three mail processing centers and eliminating about 1,490 jobs in West Virginia, Indiana and Arizona.

Spokeswoman Freda Sauter said Thursday the closings aren't directly related to the service's financial woes.

They are among five of 55 centers opened in 1990 to handle mail that couldn't be read by optical scanners.

Sauter says better scanners now read 95 percent of handwritten addresses.

The centers in Charleston, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Glendale, Ariz.

Centers in Wichita, Kan., and Salt Lake City will remain open.

The postal service expects the cuts to save approximately $4.9 million.

The agency is in the midst of broad cost-cutting efforts after losing $2.8 billion last year.

it seems that the system that wants to Create jobs is doing the opposite. why not deliver the mail 7 days a week. businesses would love it . they could get their bills out faster and reminders could be sent out even more.. just in case you forgot you owed them .lol ..have the U.S postal pizza delivery branch.. who cares what it is dont cut jobs create them.. reopen these factories that have moved over seas , the people that worked there still live here and know how to do the jobs, create worker owned companies. why close just because they moved over seas. did they take our know how. change the name reopen. tell them they cant ship their products here to the U.S when they leave this great free nation to go where the labor is cheaper.. yes we all may have to take pay cuts but its better that being out of work. write your congressman and who ever else. but raise heck just dont sit there. the next thing you know is when your order pizza someone in india will be taking your order. wake up
