Cincinnati (AP) -- Veterans plan to gather Saturday to observe the 25th anniversary of a once-controversial Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Cincinnati.

There were protests when Eden Park's bronze sculpture of two soldiers was created in 1984.

Fundraising took about three years.

The war had been unpopular with many people, and some vets remember the pain of being shunned when they came home.

One of them, Charlie Doan of nearby Union Township, says that attitude has changed over the years, and now it's the turn of the Vietnam veterans to embrace the men and women returning from places such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Doan is President of Cincinnati's Chapter 10 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

He says today's soldiers won't be treated the way vets of his era were.
