An employee with the Wood County Sheriff's Office is in trouble for stealing from the department.

Carmella (Carrie) Atkinson was accused of taking nearly $1,400.

Atkinson was arraigned Monday evening in Wood County Magistrate Court where she pleaded guilty to petit larceny.

Atkinson is an administrative assistant with Wood County Home Confinement, where Sheriff Jeff Sandy says she received cash payments from clients and then converted the money for her own use.
.
"It shows that people who steal from the citizens of Wood County will be prosecuted, and I'm just very pleased with the investigation that was conducted by the Parkersburg Police Department," Sheriff Sandy said.

At the arraignment Atkinson did repay the total amount of money that was taken.

She was sentenced to one year of probation, but if she violates the probation terms, she could go to jail for 15 days.

Sheriff Sandy says he's expecting Atkinson's resignation letter Tuesday.

Al it's nice that even though you don't agree with what happened you still let people know that you believe she is a nice and caring person. Your statement about her degrading the justice sysytem is a bit off though. She doesn't make the decisions for them, nor does anyone else. So if her punishment doesn't fit the crime then maybe Wood County should elect better officials. Or maybe the people of Wood County should learn about law and the guidelines governing sentences.

I worked with Carrie for a time a few years ago, and she was a funny, caring and I never got the impression that she felt that she was better than the next person! With that being said I do agree that in this town, and I am sure many others are just like it, the game is who you know!!! It is wrong that she was only given probation, she degraded our towns justice system and those who work for it. She obviously thought that she worked with a bunch of fools, if she felt secure enough to steal from the department!!!!Anyhow what is done is done, I truly feel sorry for her, but she deserved more!!!

1st of all, rachel jealousy doesn't look good on you. Maybe you need to find someone to love you more so you don't have to hate those that are better than you. By better I mean educated, attractive, and loved. Secondly I wouldn't exactly call special treatment have the story blasted on every news broadcast for 3 days. No other news this week made 3 days. For those of you that were on home confinement keep your receipts. She obviously wrote you one, or they wouldn't have been charging her with this. It is always someone elses fault that you are worthless. Clearly they are looking into other corrupt activity, could it be someone had a personal problem with her or her father (that everyone keeps talking about). Two other home confinement employees had access to the safe, which she did not. They also had more cause to steal. Since she generally rights the receipts it would be very easy for either of them to pockeet some money when they, not her, did the deposits.

To the people who say "she made a mistake", take a moment to think about the definition of that word. A mistake is an error made once and regretted immediately. It's result is unintentional. Carrie stole repeatedly for 9 months, fully aware that she was committing a crime. That is not a mistake. It's pathological.

Thats all fine and dandy, she is not the only problem with the force!!

Maybe she didn't get the sentence that someone else would have if they did the same thing....and that's wrong. But to think she got away clean is wrong. To be caught and broadcast on the news is humiliating, I would personally rather spend time in jail and nobody know about it than it be the talk of the town.

Theres a new Sherrif in town! No more good ole boys/girls system. But she should have gotten the same charges as any one else. Shes no better than the criminals she stole and rediculed. Make her see what home confinement is all about and the fact that some of those made a small mistake too. Carma!! No one is judging her any harsher than she has judged before herself. Good job to our elected officials and public employees.

Yep special treatment for one of their own. I do beleive in justice and mercy, but no one showed me an ounce of forgiveness when I made a mistake. No they threw the book at me and kept me in the system long enough to make them rich. Yes part of it was home confinememt. And yes, they said I didn't pay, and had to produce my receipts or they would have thrown my rear in jail. Probably because the money wasn't accounted for. I can't beleive you get the shaft when your a low life citizen, but if you are a high class little snot you get a little slap on the wrist and least sentence as possible. The system stinks and is not fair by any means. Good work Sheriff Sandy. I am glad I voted for you! A crime is a crime, punishment should be the same for anyone that commits the same crime. Parkersburg is corrupt Sheriff Sandy, can you handle it?

Yes, her dad is Ira Atkinson --- and he was a Magistrate years ago and probably still would be if he hadn't got caught taking bribes! Disgusting that this family gets special treatment when they're such a detriment to the community.
