Charleston, WV (AP) -- Unemployment rose in 35 West Virginia counties in March but 15 others reported lower jobless rates.

Unemployment rates in five other counties were unchanged from February.

The largest increase occurred in Jackson county, where 650 workers lost their jobs when Century Aluminum closed its Ravenswood plant in late February.

Figures released Friday by Workforce West Virginia show the county's unemployment rate jumped by 3.2 percentage points, from 8.9 percent in February to 12.1 percent in march.

Calhoun county had the highest unemployment rate in March with 14.3 percent.

Monongalia county's 4 percent rate was the lowest.
