Harrisburg, PA (AP) -- The operator of a large portion of the electricity grid in the eastern United States says the unseasonably high heat set a new record for power demand in April.

PJM Interconnection said people switching on air conditioners, fans and other drains on power on Monday used nearly 97,000 megawatts between 4 p.m. And 5 p.m.

The previous peak record for April was 89,000 megawatts, set in 2007.

But PJM says it needed to take no extraordinary steps to meet the demand.

PJM Interconnection coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity primarily in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
