Charleston, W.VA. (AP) -- West Virginia and federal transportation officials are launching an effort to remove unsafe commercial passenger carriers from state highways.
Operation Safe Student starts Friday and will run through May 21, a period that coincides with heightened commercial transportation traffic, along with more school field trips, according to a state news release.
The initiative will focus its inspections on vehicles at major tourist destinations, bus terminals, rest areas and places where there are many motorcoaches.
Operation Safe Student is an effort between the state's Public Service Commission and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
