Bizarre Twist in Animal Cruelty Case

Authorities are searching for a man they say threw eight dogs out of a moving vehicle, killing all eight of them.

It happened Friday on I-77 near the Rockport exit.

Humane Officer Steven Whitehair says the man got into a dispute with his girlfriend about the dogs, and then threw them onto the road, one by one.

Officer Whitehair says they can't file charges against the suspect yet because they can't find him, and that's where the story takes an unexpected twist.

"There was an unmarked vehicle there that stated he was a state trooper. We've been unable to locate that state trooper," Officer Whitehair said.

Officials with the State Police say no troopers were even near the scene at the time of the incident.

Officer Whitehair says there are eight pending animal cruelty charges against the man accused of killing the dogs.

The case is being investigated by the Wood County Sheriff's Department.

They ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please call the sheriff's department at 304-4241834.

steph, because they are nothing but dumb unthinking, unreasioning animals, unlike ppl who think, reason, feel, and are self aware, mutts and other animals have no idea, no matter how many human emotions you try to lay on them, they are still nothing more than dumb animals. you care more about mutts than humans, that is totally wrong. how many of you posted or morned over any of the human deaths or injuries reported on wtap.

I agree, if his girlfriend was with him, why not just publish his name for 'suspicion' of this crime. You know, 'wanted for questioning'. Animal cruelty laws stink. The penalties are not severe enough. Some people are sick, and prey on the weak and helpless (animals, children) and the laws should be changed to discourage this sort of cruelty. To kill them as a way to punish his girlfriend, which is what it sounds like he did, this creep will do far worse, and probably to a human.

People can defend for themselves, animals cannot. I wish all you people who are calling these poor dogs "mutts" would post your names. If you don't care about animals being killed then there's something terribly wrong with you. How would you feel if your boyfriend/girlfriend tossed your children out of the window and all i say is "so what they are just brats! There will be less screaming children in this world!"

too bad you ppl are not as concerned about what happends to ppl as you are about a bunch of mutts. its a sad world where mutts are more important than ppl.

Rebecca...Sorry about the dogs. I hope they catch this guy. Your solution to "drag him" is also against the law. Some boys tried this on an Afro American down south a few years back and actually got in trouble for it by the law. Sorry dear, just because you have a good idea, the law might not see it that way.

Wow, if you people felt so passionately about actual crime, as you do these little flea ridden canines, crime might be lower in the area. And by the way, if the woman in the car was a girlfriend, why dont they just ask her where he lives?Has anyone thought of that yet?I'm not a detective, but I think I would start at the shallow end of the pool before diving head first into the deep end.

Sounds like the guy may be a cop himself...and they have been know to lie for each other. Anyway, surely the girlfriend knows who the guy is. If she does not produce a name then she should be charged with withholding evidence and 8 counts of animal cruelty.
