Charleston, WV (AP) -- West Virginia's unemployment rate rose for the eighth consecutive month to end april at 7.8 percent.

Workforce West Virginia said Monday that during the month, unemployment increased two-tenths of a percentage point.

The increase means 61,600 west virginians are now unemployed.

With the number of unemployed workers rising, the balance in the state unemployment trust fund has been dropping.

Unemployment Compensation Director Michael Moore said the balance in the fund fell to $165 million at the end of April.

That means that under new legislation, state employers will have to pay addition taxes to get the balance back above $212 million.

Moore said letters telling employers of the new tax will be mailed soon.
