Ohio Counties Want More Access To Seized Assets

Dayton, Ohio (AP) -- A group that represents county commissioners from across Ohio wants state legislators to make it easier for counties to use seized assets from drug cases to pay for essential services in a time of widespread budget cuts.

The County Commissioners' Association of Ohio says lawmakers should allow counties to more freely use special purpose funds, which includes money and other items taken during criminal investigations.

By law, sheriffs can only use seized assets for equipment, such as guns or computers.

In Montgomery County, Sheriff Phil Plummer says he could use the $1 million he has in two funds to pay for the salaries of 15 laid-off deputies and officers.

how could any county let 1 million lay and not use it when they say people loose their jobs because they have no money to pay their employees. What other accounts are out there with money in it, money that could even help our people. everything takes a raise hike even the taxes on our homes, licenses, just everything in common and one county is going to say they 1 million dollars lying there. something needs to be done because dont you agree that there is proably more than that out in hidden accounts that only the sherriff dept knows of. it is amazing that this can happen when they have the money to pull other dept through. then on top of all this they need the stimulas money and grants. backup something is surely not right. this stimulas should help the people and their familys not the government jobs.then again look our president was to help the poor. for instance stay at homr moms got nothing people in society that should recieve a good pay
