Former Belpre Mayor Dick Thomas died Monday afternoon at the Ohio State University Medical Center after a long illness.

Thomas served as Belpre's mayor in the late 1990s. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Washington County Commission several years ago.

During his tenure as mayor, Thomas was instrumental in the construction of Belpre's new city building that's located near Howes Grove Park.

No date or time have been set yet, but funeral arrangements will be handled by Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Belpre.

WTAP will have more information on the death of Thomas as we receive it.

Many people thought Dick was too abrasive, but he is the only mayor to have gotten money out of the Washingto Co. Commissioners to come to Belpre since there ARE cities besides Marietta in Washington County. Dick was a great man with great vision who spent his own money traveling around Ohio and other parts of the country to try and bring business to Belpre. My hat is off to such a great man and my head is bowed in sorrow for this loss to his family and the community. Thank you Dick for everything.

My heart goes out to his widow. Mr. Thomas always treated me squarely, and straight forward.

Dick Thomas brought a drive and determination to the position of mayor of Belpre. He wanted to see the community progress and capitalize on all of its positives. He was a man on a mission and the community of Belpre benefitted from it. I have known many mayors in the Mid-Ohio Valley and Dick is one who truly helped make a difference in his community.
