Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- A natural gas leak forced the evacuation of a city block in downtown Charleston.
A construction crew apparently hit a gas line about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday along Virginia Street.
A construction worker says employees were told to leave the city's old courthouse and a neighboring business as a precaution.
Firefighters and Mountaineer Gas officials were working to stop the leak about an hour later as severe thunderstorms entered the area.
A call to the county commission went unanswered.
