Washington (AP) -- The number of U.S. households on the verge of losing their homes dipped in May from April, and the annual increase was the smallest in three years.

While Ohio had one of the nation's highest foreclosure rates last month, the number of foreclosure filings dropped nearly 13 percent from a year ago.

Research firm Realtytrac says more than 321,000 households received at least one foreclosure-related notice in May, a decline of 6 percent from April.

The number was up 18 percent from a year earlier but that was the smallest annual gain since June 2006.

Nevada had the nation's highest foreclosure rate last month with one every 64 households receiving a filing.

Ohio ranked 10th with a rate of one out of every 446 households.
