No Bail Reduction For Man In Plot To Kill NJ Cops

Cape May Court House, N.J. (AP) -- A judge has refused to lower the $1 million bail set for an Ohio man accused in a plot to kill two police officers in southern New Jersey.

Citing his criminal record -- including escapes from two jails or detention centers -- and history of failing to appear for scheduled court dates, Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten rejected Elvin D. Copson's request on Friday.

The 41-year-old Toledo man was charged earlier this month with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Cape May County prosecutors have said Copson, a commercial fisherman who formerly lived in New Jersey, was hired to kill the Middle Township officers so they could not testify at an upcoming trial.

However, they will not say who allegedly hired copson or provide further details about the trial.

If convicted, Copson could face up to 20 years in prison.
