Naoma, W.Va. (AP) -- Actress Darryl Hannah, NASA Scientist James Hansen and more than two dozen other mountaintop removal mining opponents have been arrested during a protest in southern West Virginia.

State police said about 30 people were charged Tuesday afternoon after they blocked state route 3 near a Massey Energy subsidiary's coal processing plant in Boone county.

They were among several hundred protesters who held a rally outside an elementary school that sits about 300 feet away from the plant's coal storage silo.

After the rally, the crowd marched quietly to the plant and attempted to enter the property.

They were blocked by several hundred coal miners chanting "Massey."

Hannah, Hansen, Former Rep. Ken Hechler and 27 others then sat on the road and were arrested on misdemeanor charges of obstruction and impeding traffic.

Amen Roper you make a great point and I would love to see DNR and others answer to this.Seen it over and over with local loggers and the bull they have to go through just to cut a few older trees and reseed the land. It is very sad.

I never understood how they could do this mountain top removal and fill in the streams and disturb the waterways. A man doing timber work for a living has to by law put a culvert in a stream because he is not allowed to drag a log through a creek because it would make the water muddy,if you are building a house and yu have distrubed dirt you have to erect these little temporary walls to kip the sediment from washing into a small stream because it might make the water cloudy. It is illegal to alter the course of a small stream going through your property and if you are found guilty of doing any of the above you can be prosecuted. But these big companies can bulldoze the top to a mountain and fill in a valley and it is perfectly legal.

It is not all about global warming. If you fly over West Virginia - it looks sick and diseased. With all of the mountain top removal - it looks like the measles....not heaven! It also has ruined your beautiful streams. There has got to be a better way...

Hechler must be senile, it's a shame to see him listed alongside a washed up actress and a fraudulent global warming activist.
