Glen White, W.Va. (AP) -- The State Department of Environmental Protection plans to award a contract to reclaim an abandoned underground mine in Raleigh County that's considered a safety hazard.
Workers discovered two shafts at the old glen white mine while digging a ditch for a sewage line last year.
Richard Darnell with the DEP says a steel plate that could easily be removed covered one shaft.
Darnell says it's unlikely an adult would enter the mine but a curious child might.
The project is estimated to cost more than $590,000. The dep plans to seek bids Tuesday.
The mine was closed in 1945.
