Ohio City Saying 'Nein' To Oktoberfest

Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Organizers in Ohio's largest city have canceled Oktoberfest, which flopped last year in Columbus where it has been a tradition since 1967.

Officials say an Ohio State football game, an OSU student break and rainy weather hurt the German festival in 2008 and it turned a profit of only $17,000, compared to $132,000 in 2007.

Organizers had hoped to re-energize the event by returning it to the city's historic German village neighborhood this year, but not enough residents would sign a petition giving their OK.

Oktoberfest has been moved around in recent years.

Last year it was held in a downtown park.

German Village Society Executive Director Erin O'Donnell says it's possible a scaled-down version of the festival can still be staged this year.
