Bluefield, W.Va. (AP) -- Former Mercer County Sheriff Danny Willis has been charged with fraudulently obtaining and possessing hydrocodone.

An information filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Bluefield says Willis fraudulently obtained and possessed the painkiller from October 2007 to May 5.

Willis also is a physician and he ran a free clinic out of the sheriff's office. He resigned from the sheriff's post in June.

In his resignation letter, Willis said he "made legally indefensible mistakes" concerning how he maintained treatment records and ordered and used medications.

His attorney, Mark Wills, didn't immediately return an after-hours telephone message Wednesday morning.

A criminal information typically indicates a defendant has reached an agreement with prosecutors.
