Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio is getting $79.3 million in grants from a $1 billion stimulus program to keep police on the streets.

Ohio's share will allow departments to hire and rehire 336 law enforcement officers, including 50 each in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.

Tuesday's announcement came one week before Columbus residents vote on a proposal to raise the city income tax from 2 percent to 2.5 percent.

City officials have said that without the increase, hundreds of police officers and firefighters could lose their jobs.

In at least one case, federal officials told an Ohio city to scale back expectations.

The city of Lima in northwest Ohio applied for money for seven officers but was advised to change that to four because demand across the U.S. was so high.
