Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Customers of West Virginia's largest natural gas utility could get a break on their monthly bills.

Mountaineer Gas is asking the state Public Service Commission to approve a 25 percent reduction of its purchased gas rates.

The rates are based on what the utility spends to buy natural gas.

The request follows a june filing that seeks a 7.8 percent increase of Mountaineer's base rates.

If the PSC approves both rate changes, the average customer's monthly bill would be reduced by about $13.75 a month.

The changes would go into effect Nov. 1.

Mountaineer serves more than 220,000 customers across West Virginia.
