Miracle Run, W.Va. (AP) -- U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says she was impressed by the coal industry's emphasis on safety after emerging from her first underground mine tour.
Solis, democratic congressman Alan Mollohan, United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts and others spent about two hours Tuesday 700 feet underground at Patriot Coal's Federal No. 2 mine.
Solis says the visit shows what cooperation between labor and management can do to improve coal mine safety.
She also pledged continuing cooperation between her agency's Mine Safety and Health Administration and the state of West Virginia.
Federal No. 2 has about 500 employees and produced more than 3 million tons of coal last year.
It's operated by St. Louis-based Patriot Coal, which has mines in West Virginia and Kentucky.
