Some Belpre Precincts to Vote on Liquor Options

Despite Belpre being a dry city, certain stores continue pushing for the right to acquire a liquor license and sell alcohol.

Two Speedways and Wal-Bon, the corporation over Napoli's and McHappy's, have filed petitions for local liquor options.

Washington County Board of Elections officials say similar petitions are filed in Belpre nearly every election, but so far none have passed.

"Belpre has been dry ever since 1933. They've chosen during elections to deny the sell of alcohol within their city limits," Tara Hupp, BOE Deputy Director, said.

In Ohio, the same liquor option can only be filed every four years, but some places are able to keep the issue on the ballot by changing the type of permit, type of alcohol sales or the time of when sales occur.

Only voters in the precincts of the places seeking a liquor license will vote on the issue.

One more thing...why do we even have to vote on this anyway??? Wasn't prohibition outlawed??? Just allow it and if the old fogies of Belpre don't like it...MOVE! I can't believe Belpre allows all of the Fast Cash places to move into town trashin up the place, but you can't even buy beer. That is beyond me!

I can't believe this can't seem to pass. Unreal. Notice how once again only certain 'precincts' are allowed to vote. I would vote FOR IT but never get the chance to. Let the whole town vote and then let's see what happens. Everyone gets to vote for or against the school levy, including people that rent apts rather than own houses so it doesn't even affect apt renters if it passes. Someone please tell me what I need to do to get the right for the whole town to vote! I agree that it would do wonders for the town and bring in tons of revenue. I would love to be able to have some nice restaurants in Belpre so I don't have to go to WV just to have a drink. It will affect the whole town, not just people that live across the street from Napoli's. Let us all vote!!!!! That is what's fair!

Hey libby...alcohol is a drug. Society just turns its back with ignorance. Please educate yourself. Alcohol is a plague on society. Alcoholics are no different than junkies. Research this please. You will find the truth. Dont let ignorance make your morals.....educate yourself.

I agree, Libby. Alcohol should be the least of their worries.
