Despite Belpre being a dry city, certain stores continue pushing for the right to acquire a liquor license and sell alcohol.

Two Speedways and Wal-Bon, the corporation over Napoli's and McHappy's, have filed petitions for local liquor options.

Washington County Board of Elections officials say similar petitions are filed in Belpre nearly every election, but so far none have passed.

"Belpre has been dry ever since 1933. They've chosen during elections to deny the sell of alcohol within their city limits," Tara Hupp, BOE Deputy Director, said.

In Ohio, the same liquor option can only be filed every four years, but some places are able to keep the issue on the ballot by changing the type of permit, type of alcohol sales or the time of when sales occur.

Only voters in the precincts of the places seeking a liquor license will vote on the issue.
