Honor Flight for Veterans in Need of More Guardians

In less than a week, dozens of local World War II veterans will make the trip to Washington D.C. to catch a glimpse of some famous war memorials.

The "Honor Flight" didn't have any trouble filling plane seats with veterans, but they still need nine volunteers to serve as guardians on the trip.

A volunteer must pay the cost of $275, which covers all food and travel expenses.

It's a one day trip to D.C. next Tuesday, August 18, in honor of our veterans.

"They put their lives on the line back in World War II. They're the greatest generation, and they never asked for a whole lot of things when they came home. So, this is our way for those who didn't serve, like myself, a way of giving back to those folks," Scott Britton, with the the Sons of Union Veterans and Sons of the American Revolution, said.

If you are unable to serve as a guardian, but would still like to show your support, you can come to the Wood County Airport next Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. when the veterans return.

The $275.00 helps off set the cost of the flight and meals. As of Saturday there were 61 Guardians and none of them were rich. They look at the Veteran not the money.

I would love to go and help but There is NO WAY I can pay that price. My papaw is going and his friend is going with him. My cousin and I were going to be the helpers, but there is no one we can afford to go. Why do they need so many volunteers anyway? I know vets that wanted to go but were turned away due to no seats for them. Not everyone needs a guardian. Why not let some more vets have the empty seats? Mildred, it doesnt say July 18, it says Aug 18th

$275 to volunteer? I hope this takes flight but unless they promote this to rich people or caring people other people will have difficulties coming up with that cash let alone the interest.

WOW !!!! $275.00 TO VOLUNTEER. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING. First the Veterans Museum asked to county commission for $600.00 so he and his assistant could travel with the group and now you need volunteers to and and help out AND pay $275.00. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I volunteer with 3 different local groups and they don't charge me a fee to help. Don't get me wrong...I think it is great what out VETS have done, but WOW...$275.00.
