Zanesville, Ohio (Ap) -- Police in eastern Ohio say an officer trying to serve a warrant was shot along with his k-9 partner.

Zanesville police were stopping and checking cars Sunday night and using a helicopter to search for the shooter.

Police say officer Mike Schiele was taken to a hospital in Columbus, 50 miles away, where he was treated for a wound to an upper leg area and then released.

The dog, Bosco, was shot multiple times and was to undergo surgery at a veterinary hospital in Columbus.

Police officials say the animal is expected to survive.

Investigators say the suspect was seen running away on foot from the area where the shooting occurred.
