Crash Test in Train Safety

The driver trip across train tracks also landed him two counts of DUI resulting in injury

Police say 22-year-old Eric Nichols of Marietta ignored the warning equipment and horns of the train crossing through 6th and green streets Friday night in downtown Parkersburg.

Thinking he could beat the train just taking off for its destination, Nichols apparently rammed the front of the train hospitalizing his passengers 23-year old Joel Johnson and an unidentified 16-year old.

Officer Kevin Hornbeck with the Wood County crash team says the train was going about 10 miles an hour when the car and train collided.

Friday night, passenger Joel Johnson was in good condition at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. The 16-year old passenger was taken to a Chalreston Hospital, and the driver Eric Nichols, who charged with two counts of DUI resulting in injury, is in good condition at Camden-Clarke.
