West Virginia Budget to be Cut

Gov. Wise plans to cut state spending by ten percent to close the looming budget hole now estimated at $200 million.

A memo from Administration Secretary Greg Burton said Wise has directed a top-to-bottom review of state government.

The review includes reduced budget proposals for the fiscal year that begins in July 2003.

The memo says Wise hopes to do the planning now so the state can avoid drastic, last-minute steps.

In an interview Tuesday with the Associated Press, Wise said the state could easily double its cigarette tax to help with the budget woes.
