West Union, W.Va. (AP) -- Charges will likely be filed within days in the death of an inmate at the North Central Regional Jail.

State officials say 43-year-old Darryl Eugene Burton died earlier this week after a fight with a fellow prisoner.

His body has been sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

Joe Thornton, deputy secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, says the fight broke out in a common area during breakfast.

He does not believe a weapon was involved but says State Police and the Regional Jail Authority are investigating.

Burton was serving 10-20 years on a child sexual abuse conviction in Harrison County.

The jail near West Union is one of the largest in the state, designed to hold 400 inmates and employing 160 workers.

My brother is an offender and is at North Central at this time. Failure to register on his birthday neted him 5yrs. Make no mistake i'm not defending him. Earlier this year there was trouble haveing offenders mixed with general population. He told me that North Central created a POD tht only contains offenders to reduce trouble with the general population. I wonder if this person did something to make a guard mad and was transfered to what is known as the gladiator POD. There are so many variables I could go on for awhile. Also keep in mind some of the very violent criminals are there waiting for a place in the state prison which sometimes takes a year plus. This isn't the first death at North Central and probally will not be the last.

Although my brother made a terrible mistake, he didn't deserve to be murdered in jail.I just hope this never happens to anyone in your family as it causes such pain and deveswtation for all surviving family members on both sides. There are details that have never been made public and probably never will be, and just remember that according to the Bible who are we to judge? I am by no means justifying what he did.Just wanted you to know despite what is being said about him, he was a good guy with a big heart that made poor judgement. "Little brother" I love you and will miss you ever day of my life on earth. Love, Sissy

wvnrja. is overcrowded just like all the other jails in this state. Who are you people to say that it was right for another inmate to take justice in his own hands? Sure the man was a sicko but he did not deserve to die at the hands of another man. Also why do they house people who should be in a prison with people who are supposed to be doing county time? That jail is a rat hole just ask any one who has had to do a couple of days in it. Just think you could be in there for some thing as simple as a misdemeanor cuz there ain't no more county jails and if you can't post bond you could be fighting for your life for something as simple as sitting in a long timers seat. My cousin did.Split his head open cuz he wold not move out of a chair that some other dude thought belonged to him. Thats your jail house justice for ya.By the way do any of you know what the other guy was in for?Don't praise him for doing wrong.

instead of killing someone or judging someone why don't you find out if they actually done what they are accused of doing in the first place. i am like the one who said that in God's eyes no sin is worst than the other sin.

In God's eyes one sin is no worse than another. However we judge differently. I do not condone what that man did (my heart goes out to the child) but, he did not deserve to be beaten to death, no one does.

Jailhouse appears that the jail residents do not care for those who prey on children either and probably saved large amounts of housing expenses for the taxpayers.
