Cincinnati (AP) -- Police say a woman has been arrested for allegedly spanking another woman's 2-year-old son in a store.

Gloria Ballard was due in a Hamilton County court later Wednesday to face an assault charge.

Cincinnati police say the toddler said something that apparently annoyed her inside a Salvation Army store on Tuesday.

Police say she then told the boy's mother she didn't know how to take care of her son, put him over her knee, and spanked him three times.

Police say the two women didn't know each other and that the 44-year-old Ballard wasn't given permission to touch the child.

The problem is just what motherof1 mentioned If you spank your child in a public place they can and probably will call the police on you. That is why I will never spank my child in public. Unfortunalty the rules have changed and while I believe that a spanking(not beating) is in order at home it is risky to do it in public. I'm not going to jail or have the cops called on me because my 2year old is acting up. Just because you don't see the parent taking care of the problem in the store that doesn't mean they won't take care of it when they get out of the store. People should mind thier own business especially when it comes to other peoples children unless that child is being abused.

Just because a 2 year old acts out in a store, doesn't mean they need a spanking. I agree with motherof1, that spanking is okay when necessary (certainly not beating). However...no one should ever spank someone else's kid unless given permission (like grandparents, etc.) Certainly not someone who doesn't even know the parent or child. I have taken my 2 year old to the store and she has thrown some pretty embarrassing tantrums...however in every case, she has needed a NAP not a spanking. Maybe the child needed a spanking but maybe not...I don't know. But I would certainly sue someone who touched my child in a situation like this. It was a good chance the child was over tired, over stimulated, and being in the store just made things worse...when this lady spanked this child, she was just making assumptions about this mother and child. My guess...she was probably not a child psychologist.

sounds like the kid needed it, and the mother should of had enough common sense to do it herself. sounds like she needs a little parenting class.. instead of sueing, she needs to figure out what she is doing wrong to make her kid act like he did.

the woman had no right to touch the other woman's child, especially without permission. BUT this is whats wrong with society now days. less spanking and more spoiling. its ok to spank a kid, but here is a fine line between spanking and beating. i was in a store and a child went down the cereal aisle, arm extended, and knocked down 20 boxes of cereal, the mother spanked her child. and the cops were there to meet her at the door on her way out. COME ON!
