Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- Michele Wheatly, a dean at Ohio's Wright State University, is the new provost at West Virginia University.

The 53-year-old native of London, England, will start work Jan. 1 and earn $295,000.

President James Clements announced his pick for chief academic officer Wednesday.

Wheatly has been the head of the College of Science and Mathematics at Wright State since 2002 and has been a principal investigator on research that won more than $21 million in grants.

She also helped double the college's research spending and boost graduate student enrollment by 68 percent.

The provost's job opened up last year when gerald lang resigned over a scandal involving a master's degree improperly awarded to the governor's daughter.

It also took down former president Mike Garrison.
