Coalwood, W.Va. (AP) -- Natalie Canerday played Homer Hickam's mother in the 1999 film "October Sky," but she's never seen the West Virginia town where the movie's events took place.

That will change this year, when Canerday joins Hickam at the October Sky Festival in Coalwood on Oct. 3.

Canerday, whose films include "Sling blade" and "Walk The Line," told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that she's looking forward to seeing where Hickam, a NASA rocket scientist, launched rockets with friends as a teenager.

Canerday says she's wanted to see the real coalwood since working on the film, which was shot in Petros, Tenn.

This year's festival will feature some of Hickam's fellow "Rocket Boys" and students from across the country participating in rocket launches.

Why is it a movie pertaining to somthing that happened within this state can't be filmed in this state? "Follow the River", the movie based upon Mary Draper Ingles' escape from the Shawnees in 1755 was filmed in North Carolina. Hey, her story covered VA, WV, KY, and Ohio. West Virginia would've been ideal for filming. (At least, they got the right state - if not the right location - in "Matewan")
