An Extra Cost for Some Ohio Drivers

Changes at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will have some Ohio drivers dipping even further into their wallets.

Starting Thursday, a personalized license plate will cost an additional $50 a year.

That's up from the old fee of $35.

The rate increase is something that some Ohioans say will make them think twice before renewing or adding a special message to their vehicle.

"That's quite a bit for one individual increase. I think when it comes time to renew my plates next September, I'll probably reconsider. I'll definitely give it some more thought," Christy Hockenberry, who has a personalized license plate, said.

The Ohio BMV is also raising fees on temporary tags and vision screenings.

The BMV says the extra charges are to help support the Ohio Highway Patrol.

I miss Ohio licenses. I am sure you may think that this is an outrageous price, however, I use to live in Ohio and I moved to AZ. Well imagine my surprise whne my first year of buying tags out here was $250.00. I have had 3 years of tags and they are suppose to go down in price. Well my last amount for this year was $205 and this is just for a regular tage. I can't wait to come back to Ohio and pay this low fee.
