Beckley, W.Va. (AP) -- Motorists on the West Virginia Turnpike are slowing down and taking fewer chances as the state police steps up its patrols of the toll road.

Turnpike manager Greg Barr said Thursday that hazardous moving warnings issued to passenger vehicles dropped from 1,247 in August 2008 to 874 this past August.

But warnings issued to commercial trucks fell by only four.

Barr attributed the decrease to the State Police's higher visibility on the Turnpike.
